Des Reid – “Prelude”

Des Reid’s work “Prelude” is a kaleidoscopic, picturesque view of a starry night portrayed through a classic-rock-like chord progression, a deep indebtedness to jazz, and a developed sense of musical spaciousness.  One can hear the Hotel California-like harmonic sequence that is trimmed with less conventional harmonies, a certain homage to Pat Metheny, and a likeness to Pink Floyd’s far-out senses of structure.  A song that is based on a loop, the loop is subtly diverse just enough to make the whole thing not boring; rather, each subsequent guitar solo is a different meteor hurtling through the atmosphere, as one looks up at the night sky above.
